A Shortage of Good Leaders

The more I work with various organizations, the clear missing link in their success is clearly a shortage of leaders at all levels. There is no earth-shattering reason for this – it’s simply because there are many people who do not understand the fundamental concept of leadership which is SACRIFICE.

Forget for a moment about technical skills – you must learn to sacrifice if you are ever to be a leader. If you don’t know what it means, let me tell you. To sacrifice is the giving of oneself freely without expecting anything in return. Have you every sacrificed anything before or is the word so new to you that you’re hearing it for the first time?

There are three kinds of people that fall into the categories of sacrifice and leaders. The first are those who flat out refuse. The second are those who just don’t know how while the third are those who want to but are not capable. So how do you move forward from here? What do you do?

The best way to develop leaders is to do it from Day 1 of their learning journey. But it’s not just about teaching – look at the moral lessons being “taught” in schools today. How can the message get across when these teachers who are supposed to be leaders, act like they’re about to die – so half dead?

If you are in the teaching line and reading this, buck up and put some spark into your life. No one gives a damn if you’ve got a lot of work if you have family problems – you are responsible in molding young minds in kindergartens, primary schools, secondary and tertiary institutions and you’d better grow a back bone and lead these children right.

You also have to know what it means to sacrifice – don’t become a teacher because of the benefits and the long holidays. You should bury your head in the ground if you think like that. Young minds need guidance and leadership because they spend so much time in school that you have to set a good example and show them what sacrifice is all about.

Make “sacrifice” your word of the day – learn what it means, learn from it, look out for it in the actions of others, develop it within yourself and then you might just be able to ease the shortage of good leaders.

Yes,this is a common problem among Malaysians, they want everything the easy way, and truly beleive that everything can be achieved easily. I truly feel sad for those who think like that, because they will never survive later in life even if they are mildly successful now.

I have a group of friends, who are teaching in primary school. Their mind set to become a teacher, in chinese, we called "Golden Bowl". Tis is the only job can make their life easier in the future. Can imagine how they lead the young or taught in school?

Agreed with Ernie. To be a good leader, 1st we need to learn is "Sacrifice" without expecting anything in return. Leader always has the bigger picture to see and do the thing.

sacrifice is not a new word in corporate world. it has been around and yes, an act that we always said to ourself, 'i'll deal with you later.' With the new economy, nuh-uh! we got to make sacrifice be it sacrifice our lunch time to get things done, sacrifice our weekend to ensure team are well trained or sacrifice our time with family to achieve what we desire for.

Not an easy things to do, but we all need to make sacrifice!

It's hard to sacrifice something. But it's all about choice. When you become a leader, there's a lot of things you need to sacrifice. If you have family, make them understand.Leader must have big heart to face a lot of challenges.

To the teachers, teaching is not just go to school and refer to sllybus. It's more than that. You're the part of student's development. Help your students grow & see the world. Do not just spoon fed them, you're not helping them to develop their way of thinking.

To sacrifice, simply meaning that putting 200% than the rest of the people and without expecting anything in return. Always remember to take good care of our people.

One thing to share (learnt from Ernie) ..

A great leader is to always take good care of their people. Making sure our team mates are well taken care of, only will bring us success.

This is the feedback i get from my brother in form 4, "The teacher is making us sleeping in class". What he means is that the energy in getting the student to be excited about their studies is just not there. I still remember some really bad teachers that i have and till now still teaching the same school my brother studies. And they never change, which is quite scary as how are they going to teach the young people to accept challenges and be prepared to face changes.

I wrote this to one of my previous superior:

"A good manager does NOT mean a good leader."

How true is it that our society is running short of good leaders.
