The Illusion of Overnight Success

The Illusion of Overnight Success — Nobody Sees the Infrastructure because people usually see the building. They rarely see the years spent laying the foundation.

They see PORTMAN today — the schools, the campus, the university, the education platforms, the people, the partnerships and the ambitions.

What they don’t see are the years of uncertainty behind it. The sleepless nights solving problems nobody else knew existed. The businesses that didn’t work. The failed partnership both business & personal.

The capital that was difficult to raise.
The decisions that looked completely irrational at the time. The mistakes that cost money, relationships and opportunities. The periods where cash flow was tight, growth stalled and self-doubt became a daily companion. And perhaps most difficult of all, the opinions of people who were close enough to know the journey, yet still questioned whether it would ever amount to anything.

But that’s the strange thing about building something meaningful. The world tends to measure the outcome.
The entrepreneur experiences the process. For me, PORTMAN was never meant to be just another education company.

Over the years, my thinking has evolved. I don’t want to simply operate more schools, recruit more students or build a larger organisation. I want to build education infrastructure. Infrastructure that allows education businesses, educators and entrepreneurs to access technology, platforms, curriculum, AI, accreditation, capital and distribution in ways that were previously difficult to access.

That is why PORTMAN today is becoming much bigger than the physical schools that people can see. The ultimate ambition is not to build one successful education company.
It is to build an ecosystem that can empower thousands of education entrepreneurs and potentially serve millions of learners across the region.

That vision didn’t arrive overnight.

It was built through decades of accumulated experience, failures, experimentation, relationships, capital allocation and, frankly, a lot of pain.

There were many moments when walking away would have been easier. But entrepreneurship isn’t really about avoiding those moments.

It’s about continuing to build when there is no applause.

Today, some people may look at PORTMAN and see opportunity.

I see the battle scars underneath it.

Every scar represents a lesson.

Every failure became part of the infrastructure.

Every difficult season strengthened the foundation.

And every person who stayed through those difficult years became part of the story.

The world will eventually see the results of what you quietly build for years.

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson I’ve learned:

Don’t chase the appearance of success. Build something that can survive success.

That is what I am trying to do with PORTMAN. Not simply build a bigger company. Build an education infrastructure that can outlive me.

I agree that meaningful work is rarely built overnight. The unseen effort, lessons from failure, and consistency over time are what ultimately shape anything worth building. And often, it is the quiet contributions of those along the way that give the foundation its strength. In the end, the way we value the journey is also reflected in how we recognise the people who were part of it, especially through the difficult seasons.

“Absolutely true. What people see as success today is often built on years of struggles, failures, and sacrifices that nobody sees. Respect the journey behind the achievement. 👏”

Hi boss,

This sharing resonates with me deeply, and I believe it is something everyone should understand.

People see PORTMAN today, but they do not see how difficult the road has been to get here. I still consider myself an infant in this company after almost four years, but even within these four years, I have seen how much it takes to establish and build a school. The long hours, the constant learning, the pressure, the mistakes, and having to constantly figure out what it really takes to keep a school moving forward.

There were many moments when I honestly thought about quitting. There were times when I wondered, “How are we going to get through this?” But somehow, we kept going.

Looking back, I realise that the position PORTMAN is in today, and even the position I am in today, was shaped by those difficult years. I grew together with the company, and the challenges taught me more than any easy period ever could.

The line that speaks to me the most is, “Don’t chase the appearance of success.” Because the journey behind meaningful success is often filled with pain, sacrifice, uncertainty and moments that nobody sees.

I totally agree with you, Mr. Ernie. Success doesn't come in a day. It requires sufficient time, endless sacrifices, and consistent effort. This is my first workplace experience, and I've been with PORTMAN for two years now. In this time, I've seen PORTMAN grow, and I've grown alongside it. From being nervous on my first day of probation as a teacher, to now handling school operations, PORTMAN has taught me so much about work, life, people, and working under pressure while finding ways to solve problems. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself why I started, and then all the effort makes sense. Every failure teaches us a lesson that helps us succeed in the future. Achieving success can come relatively easily, but maintaining it takes constant effort to keep the foundation strong.

An incredibly motivating analysis of what it takes to create something significant. It strikes a deep chord to be reminded that success frequently comes after years of invisible work, setbacks, sacrifices, and tenacity.

The idea of creating an education environment that opens doors for others, rather than just a business, is what really sticks out. The phrase "Build something that can survive success" serves as a potent reminder that long-term effects are far more valuable than quick recognition.

There are ups and downs in every start of a business. Many entrepreneurs could not even sleep just thinking about how to expand their business. Surely, building a business is never an easy journey. There will be moments of doubt, financial pressure, unexpected problems, and decisions that keep you awake at night.

But every challenge is part of the process. What matters is how we learn from those experiences, keep moving forward, and continue building something better. Success does not happen overnight. It takes patience, consistency, sacrifice, and the courage to keep going even when things don't go according to plan.

At the end of the day, every successful business started somewhere with a simple idea, a lot of uncertainty, and someone who refused to give up.

Love the long-term perspective here. Building something that can outlive the founder is perhaps the ultimate measure of impact. The ambition is inspiring, but even more inspiring is the resilience behind it. Turning setbacks into infrastructure is a powerful mindset.

This really stood out to me. We often see the success, but rarely the years of uncertainty, failures and hard work behind it.

As an educator, I believe the same applies to education. Meaningful impact takes time to build, and the foundation we create today can shape far more than what we see in the present. Education infrastructure is not only about schools, technology, curriculum or systems. It is also about the people, culture, leadership and willingness to continuously improve what already exists.💪🏻

It’s inspiring to learn the story behind what we experience today at PORTMAN. Since joining three years ago, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing PORTMAN’s continued growth and evolution.

The vision extends far beyond buildings and schools, it is about creating an ecosystem that empowers educators, entrepreneurs, and learners.

“Don’t chase the appearance of success. Build something that can survive success.” These words truly capture the essence of building with purpose, resilience, and a vision that reaches beyond the present. They are a powerful reminder that true success is measured not only by what we achieve, but also by what we leave behind.

I think the biggest shift is probably not just the growth of PORTMAN, but how the vision behind it has evolved over time.

It reminds me that growth is not simply about becoming bigger. It is about building the right systems, people, capabilities and culture to make that growth sustainable.

For me, it also gives me a clearer perspective on my own role. If PORTMAN is moving towards becoming an education infrastructure and ecosystem, then our responsibility is not just to run what we have today, but to contribute to building what PORTMAN can become tomorrow.

The foundation may have taken decades to build, but perhaps the next chapter is about turning that foundation into something that can go much further than the original vision.

I feel very grateful to be part of that journey and to have the opportunity to contribute to what comes next.

What I take from this is that building something meaningful is never a straight path.

Things change, problems come up, plans don’t always go as expected, and sometimes we have to figure things out along the way.

But those experiences are also where we learn and grow.

Looking back, it makes me realise that every challenge and every lesson becomes part of building something stronger. That’s what makes the journey worth being part of.

What people see are big companies that seem to have grown overnight, expanding rapidly in less than three years after the pandemic. What people don’t see is the relentless effort, constant adjustments, bold moves and resilience along the way. Looking at the 14 frames on PORTMAN’s milestone wall, showing the journey from 2003 until today and the vision ahead, reminds me of all that went into this growth!

The same lesson as the bamboo lesson: years spent growing roots underground to strengthen the foundation, before the rapid growth becomes visible.

I’m grateful that I chose to start this journey with PORTMAN back in 2012, from being a student learning business to then joining the business and working with the right leaders, learning the founder’s view, mindset, thought processes, and the actions and resilience required to be a real founder. Still learning and still counting!
